How to Organise Virtual Club Rides on Zwift, Rouvy or MyWhoosh
Run an indoor club ride that keeps riders together: the platform, Meetup or Club Event, the pace band, leader and sweep roles, a 60-minute session and a winter league.
A virtual club ride is a scheduled indoor ride the club owns on Zwift, Rouvy or MyWhoosh, run like the Sunday ride: one event, one pace promise, a named leader and sweep, a voice channel and a welcome for first-timers. To organise a Zwift group ride for your club, a club owner or moderator creates a Club Event, switches on Keep Everyone Together, names a leader and a sweeper, and posts the link where the outdoor rides go.
Wednesday 11 November, 19:00. Fourteen members are on their turbos in fourteen kitchens. Eleven minutes in, the group is spread across 4 km of Watopia, two newcomers have closed the app, and the "club ride" has become fourteen solo rides sharing a start time. Nobody ran it as a club ride.
Pick the platform: what each one gives a club, and what it costs
| Zwift | Rouvy | MyWhoosh | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price (UK / EU) | £17.99 or €19.99 a month; 14-day trial on monthly, new users only (Zwift, 15 Dec 2025) | Single £17.99 / €19.99 a month; Group plan for up to 5 riders £53.99 / €59.99 (Rouvy, prices from 15 Jul 2025) | Free to ride (MyWhoosh homepage, read 21 Oct 2026) |
| Who creates a club ride | Owners and moderators (Club Event); any Zwifter, inviting followers (Meetup) | Created from the Events page on rouvy.com | Team owners with an active "event credit plan" (MyWhoosh Link App v3); no public price |
| Keeps the group together | Keep Everyone Together, but not with event results | An "elastic band" around the leader | Not stated for Team Events |
| Leader and sweep markers | Optional leader and sweeper | Leader only | Not stated |
| Chat and voice | Text; a Discord link on the club and its events | Text only, not saved after the ride | In-app chat (BikeRadar, 28 Jan 2025) |
| Classic (non-smart) trainer | Estimated power from a speed sensor | Virtual power from a speed sensor | Speed sensor on a classic trainer, in Free Ride mode (MyWhoosh 4.0.0); not stated for events |
Only Zwift has built-in leader and sweeper markers, and none of the three documents in-ride voice, so every club ends up on a separate voice app.
Do this: pick the platform most regulars already pay for. If nobody pays, start with trial weeks or free rides (Rouvy: 7-day trial, then 20 km a month free), then move the winter league to whichever platform the regulars adopt.
Meetup or Club Event: which Zwift format to use
| Meetup | Club Event | |
|---|---|---|
| Who creates it | Any Zwifter; invitees must follow you | Club owners and moderators |
| Limits | Up to 100 invitees, 7 days ahead, join up to 30 minutes late | Group Ride or Group Workout, optional Late Join |
| Keep Everyone Together | Available | Group Rides only, not Group Workouts |
| Roles | None | Optional leader and sweeper |
| Who can join | People you invite | Club members only, or anyone with the link; a Women Only option |
| Best for | A six-rider ad-hoc spin | Anything on the club calendar |
The key trade-off: on a Zwift club event, Keep Everyone Together and Event Results cannot both be on (Zwift Insider, updated 31 Jan 2024). You choose a social ride where nobody is dropped or a ride with a finishing order. Changes the edit screen doesn't offer must be requested "at least 24 hours before the scheduled start", so set events up a week out.
Do this: Meetups for spontaneous spins; a Club Event for every calendar ride, Late Join on for social rides. Zwift has no recurring club events and schedules at most 28 days ahead (Zwift Clubs FAQ): create each Wednesday yourself.
Keep-together or a pace band: setting the pace for a mixed group
The rubber band. Zwift's Keep Everyone Together and Rouvy's elastic band hold every rider in the group whatever their power. Rouvy puts it plainly: "the farther behind you are, the more assistance you get", and riders trying to break away need "20 to 30% more effort to stay ahead" (Rouvy, updated 20 Oct 2026). On Zwift, a rider who stops pedalling is "dropped from the group, and it may be difficult to rejoin" (Zwift's club-events page). This is the virtual no-drop ride, and the right default for a social session.
A steady band in W/kg. With keep-together off, the leader holds a published watts-per-kilo target. The band must suit everyone. Endurance pace, Andrew Coggan's "all day" level, runs from 56% to 75% of FTP (TrainingPeaks, updated 18 Jul 2026). So a steady ride at R W/kg is endurance pace only for riders whose FTP sits between R ÷ 0.75 and R ÷ 0.56: the strongest rider it suits is 1.34 times the weakest (0.75 ÷ 0.56). We call it the 1.34 rule.
| Rider's FTP | Ride intensity (% of FTP) |
|---|---|
| 2.0 W/kg | 90 |
| 2.4 W/kg | 75 |
| 2.8 W/kg | 64 |
| 3.2 W/kg | 56 |
| 3.6 W/kg | 50 |
| 4.0 W/kg | 45 |
| Ride band | Suits FTP of | 65 kg | 75 kg | 90 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4 W/kg | 1.87–2.50 W/kg | 91 W | 105 W | 126 W |
| 1.8 W/kg | 2.40–3.21 W/kg | 117 W | 135 W | 162 W |
| 2.2 W/kg | 2.93–3.93 W/kg | 143 W | 165 W | 198 W |
The decision: set the band at 0.75 × your weakest regular's FTP (2.4 → 1.8 W/kg), then divide your strongest regular's FTP by your weakest's. Under about 1.34, one steady band works. Over it, switch keep-together on or split into two bands, as you would split A, B and C pace groups outdoors. A planning rule: FTPs are riders' own estimates. You're aiming for Zone 2.
Riders who miss the slot can follow a RoboPacer, Zwift's pace bots from 0.8 to 4.2 W/kg (Zwift Insider, updated 18 Sep 2026), but that is not a club ride. Do this: put the promise in the event title, "Wed Social, keep-together on" or "Wed Steady 1.8 W/kg".
Leader, sweep and host: the roles online
Indoors, nobody can see the rider who is struggling, so the roles have to.
- Leader (yellow beacon on Zwift, per Zwift Insider): holds the pace and posts three canned chat lines: "Route X, finish [time]", "Band 1.8 W/kg, sweep is [name]" and "Need to stop? Coffee break, don't just stop". Chat is "the only reliable way to communicate with your entire group" (Zwift Insider, updated 29 Jan 2020).
- Sweep (red beacon): rides at the back and helps riders back into the draft. On a keep-together ride, the sweep tells anyone who must stop pedalling to take a coffee break, which keeps them with the pack briefly (Eric Schlange's comment reply on Zwift Insider).
- Host, our own addition: riding easy, runs voice and chat, greets people, answers "my trainer won't pair" and keeps the league register, because the leader can't read messages and hold a power target.
Voice turns a shared start time into a club ride. Zwift has no voice chat, but since February 2023 a club and its events can carry a Discord link (Zwift forums, 3 Feb 2023). "Social connections keep many people in cycling, and it's no different indoors," as Eric Schlange wrote in Zwift Insider on Discord (updated 7 Jan 2026). His group-ride advice holds too: "assume most participants won't be on it."
Put the voice etiquette in the event description: muted by default, push-to-talk, one voice for calls. Rotate the three roles; the ride leader checklist applies indoors, and an indoor sweep shift is a gentle first step in recruiting new ride leaders.
The welcome flow: a first-timer's first 15 minutes
Most first-timers are lost before the start: no invite, no pairing, no group.
- 48 hours before: one checklist: app updated, trainer paired at home, club joined (or leader followed), Discord link, fan, towel. Zwift club members must be 16 or over and invited by an owner or moderator (Zwift Clubs FAQ, updated 7 Aug 2025), so invite now, not at 18:58.
- 15 minutes before: everyone logs in. On Rouvy, a device clock out of sync can block joining (Rouvy, updated 14 Oct 2026); early arrival leaves time to fix it.
- At the start: the host greets each newcomer by name and the leader gives them a Ride On.
- Within 24 hours: one message asking how it went, with next week's date.
Post indoor rides in the same place as outdoor ones (one channel, not five); running a beginner-friendly first ride transfers almost word for word. Discord asks users to be at least 13, "but in some countries you may need to be as old as 16" (Discord, updated 21 Oct 2026). Before an under-18 joins club voice, ask your welfare officer and national federation (British Cycling, FFC or FFVélo, RFEC, FCI).
A 60-minute club session template
An hour on a flat or rolling route of known length ends on time. Paste it into each Club Event's description.
| Minutes | What happens | Who |
|---|---|---|
| −15 to 0 | Log in, pair, voice check, newcomers greeted | Host |
| 0–10 | Easy spin, introductions, canned lines in chat | Leader |
| 10–45 | Main block, steady band or keep-together. Effort weeks: the route finishes here; the last 3 km is the effort, placed by Event Results; regroup past the finish arch and ride back together | Leader, sweep |
| 45–55 | Easy; on banded weeks, regroup anyone who slipped off | Sweep |
| 55–60 | Cool-down, next week's date, screenshot for the club channel, register taken | Host |
A Group Workout club event suits a training night, but it has no keep-together and a leader but no sweeper: treat it as a shared session on individual targets, not a group ride.
A 10-week winter league that rewards turning up
The league's job is to keep the club together over winter, not to find the fastest rider. Score attendance first, and a 2.2 W/kg rider who comes every week can beat the club's strongest.
Our example calendar: ten Wednesdays, 13 January to 17 March 2027, finishing before the clocks go forward on Sunday 28 March.
| What | Points | Season cap | Maximum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Session ridden (on the platform, or on voice without a smart trainer) | 10 | 10 weeks | 100 |
| Led, swept or hosted | 5 | 2 times | 10 |
| Brought a first-timer who finished | 5 | 2 times | 10 |
| Club effort: first / second / third over the last 3 km, from Event Results | 3 / 2 / 1 | 4 weeks | 12 |
| Rode all 10 weeks | 10 | Once | 10 |
| Total possible | 142 |
Turning up and helping out is worth 130 of the 142 points; speed is worth 12. Tie-break: more sessions ridden, then more led, swept or hosted. Run the four effort weeks with keep-together off and Event Results on, announced a week ahead. Keep the prize modest: a mug, a kit discount, a jersey at the spring ride.
A 64-day league spans three monthly payments, or two for a new Zwift rider whose trial starts on week one:
| Option | Per rider (GBP) | Per rider (EUR) |
|---|---|---|
| MyWhoosh rider | 0 | 0 |
| Rouvy Group plan shared by 5, 3 months (the host or treasurer pays and collects) | 32.39 | 35.99 |
| Zwift monthly, new account with trial (2 payments) | 35.98 | 39.98 |
| Zwift monthly or Rouvy Single, 3 payments | 53.97 | 59.97 |
Riders without a smart trainer, and the spring bridge outdoors
A league that only counts smart-trainer owners has become a kit test. Two ways in:
- Classic trainer plus speed sensor. Zwift estimates "zPower" (Zwift, updated 8 Jul 2026; set-up in Zwift Insider's guide), but says it "isn't available in Zwift-organized events" without saying whether club events and Meetups count: test with one rider first. On Rouvy, a speed sensor gives virtual power, though "a cadence sensor alone isn't enough" (Rouvy, updated 12 Oct 2026). MyWhoosh reads a speed sensor in Free Ride mode (version 4.0.0): test one rider in a Team Event first.
- Voice only. A rider on rollers, a gym bike or a basic turbo joins the voice channel and rides by feel, with the leader calling easy, steady or hard. They score attendance like everyone else.
Then spring. Indoor riding builds fitness, not bunch skills: the software steers for you, nobody signals, nobody holds a wheel. Plan the bridge:
- A short no-drop first outdoor ride for the indoor regulars on Sunday 28 March 2027, the day the clocks go forward: remind everyone the evening before.
- Ten minutes of skills before rolling out: hand signals and calls and holding a wheel. Then how to not get dropped.
- The league prize-giving at the café stop, so the last indoor night and the first outdoor ride feel like one event.
Keep the Wednesday event alive as the fallback when the weather policy cancels a road ride. Indoor sits beside the winter club ride programme, not instead of it, and the club ride playbook covers the outdoor ride day.
FAQ
Can you do a group ride on Zwift and stay together?
Yes: switch on Keep Everyone Together in a Meetup or a Club Event Group Ride. A rider who stops pedalling is dropped.
What is the difference between a Zwift Meetup and a Club Event?
Any Zwifter creates a Meetup for up to 100 followers; only owners and moderators create Club Events, which add leader and sweeper roles.
What W/kg should a mixed club ride use?
0.75 × your weakest regular's FTP. If your strongest FTP is over 1.34 times your weakest, use keep-together or two bands.
Do you need a smart trainer for a virtual club ride?
No. On Zwift and Rouvy a classic trainer with a speed sensor gives estimated power (zPower excludes Zwift-organized events: test one rider in a club event first), unless a Rouvy organiser ticks Smart Trainers Only (Rouvy's group-ride guide). Others can ride along on voice.
Is MyWhoosh free for a club?
Riding is free. Team Events need an event credit plan with no published price (21 October 2026); ask MyWhoosh.
